According to a recent report from Bloomberg, Netflix is considering the prospect of entering the world of video game streaming.
Back in May this year, reports were first making the rounds that Netflix may enter the video games market. It was claimed that Netflix had already begun recruiting for an executive to lead the new business venture.
When questioned on the reports video game rumours back in May, Netflix provided GameSpot with a brief statement.
“Our members value the variety and quality of our content. It’s why we’ve continually expanded our offering–from series to documentaries, film, local language originals and reality TV,” said a spokesperson.
However, the report from Bloomberg claims that Netflix has now hired a new executive, potentially to lead that reported business venture. The new employee in question is Mike Verdu, a former Facebook, and Electronic Arts executive.
Mike Verdu oversaw bringing new games to Facebook’s Oculus platform, and of course, Electronic Arts has been a leading company in the video games industry for decades. So, it is fair to say that Verdu is bringing a lot of pedigree and experience to Netflix.
Is there no smoke without fire?
We must mention that as reliable as these reports might be, we must take all forms of speculation with a pinch of salt until proven otherwise. However, the pieces are starting to add up.
Seeing as Netflix is already so successful with its streaming platform bringing a wealth of movies and TV series straight to our homes, it makes sense that the video games market might be its next venture.
I take it no one bothered to see what happened when Google, Amazon, and Nvidia tried this.
