Someone Just Bought A Sealed Copy Of Skyrim For $600

Look, I’ll admit it; Skyrim is one of the best RPGs of all time. However, for whatever reason, someone decided to drop $600 on a sealed copy of the game at a recent auction. Best of all? It’s not even the best version of the game! [via kotaku]

Before you get too excited, it’s worth mentioning that this particular copy of Skyrim was graded and sealed before the auction. Therefore, the buyer was essentially buying the game on the premise of its condition rather than the value of the game itself. Nevertheless, playing $600 for a mass-produced game is pretty weird. I mean, you can currently pick up a sealed copy of the game on eBay for around $20.

Why would someone pay $600 for Skyrim?

So, what’s the deal here? Why would someone pay $600 for a seemingly ordinary copy of Skyrim? Well, the buyer might be a serious collector on the hunt for the most pristine Xbox 360 games. According to the game’s listing details over on Heritage Auctions, this is the first time the company has offered a sealed copy of the RPG:

“Purely the apotheosis of role-playing games, Skyrim is a game that one could never possibly tire of. Fans sink countless hours in the land of Tamriel, and the love for this game runs deep. We’ve yet to offer a sealed copy until now, so we would imagine this will be a tough lot to claim!”

Again, we’d probably advise checking eBay first rather than splashing out on a sealed copy of a game at a specialist auction house. Of course, if you’re simply looking to play Skyrim, then there’s also better versions available than the bug-ridden seventh-gen version. I mean, that’s unless you have some sort of weird nostalgia for glitchy dragons and headless characters.

In other odd retro gaming auction news, a sealed copy of Super Mario 64 recently sold for $1,560,000. As a result, the classic Mario caper now holds the title of “most expensive video game”.
