After nearly three long years since its announcement and seeing absolutely no gameplay, finally the Resident Evil 2 Remake was revealed to the world by Capcom at Sony’s E3 press briefing, and with it came an awesome gameplay trailer and a release date, and we couldn’t be more excited with what we saw.
The trailer opens up with the iconic water fountain in the lobby area of the Raccoon City Police Department after all hell has broken loose in the city. We then soon get our first glimpse of rookie cop, Leon S. Kennedy sporting a new look, yet still kitted out in that iconic RCPD gear, then we see our first zombie which other then looking absolutely gruesome, it charges at Leon from a close distance, pretty much confirming that the zombies in this remake will be far quicker than those in the 1998 original.
Leon then explores the police department, for which fans will recognise some of the areas that we see, including scenes involving a helicopter crash and the interaction with Lieutenant Marvin Branagh, who I used to refer to as back in the day, as the Will Smith Zombie. Then as the trailer comes to a close, we get brief glimpses of Claire Redfield, Sherry Birkin and the chilling Licker.
The Resident Evil 2 Remake will be powered by the RE Engine, will feature updated controls and will have a new Resident Evil 4-style, over-the-shoulder camera. Judging from the gameplay trailer, this remake looks to capture the true essence of the Resident Evil horror and it looks absolutely gorgeous to boot, especially with the stunning lighting effects. It’s also worth noting that we only saw gameplay for Leon in the reveal, so hopefully we’ll get to see some of Claire’s campaign in the near future. It will also be interesting to see if this remake will feature the scenario A and B campaigns for both of the respective characters, and will we see some new areas and enemies like we had with the Nintendo GameCube remake of the original Resident Evil?
I’m a big Resident Evil fan as it is, but Resident Evil 2 is by far my favourite game of all-time and I couldn’t be more excited. There are so many scenes that I can’t wait to revisit in this new generation, from the first Licker encounter, the various mutations of William Birkin and I can’t wait to visit my good old friend in the Kendo Gun Shop, Mr Robert Kendo himself.
We can’t wait to see more of this remake in the near future, but let us know what moments you’re looking forward to revisiting again or perhaps you’re new to the world of Resident Evil 2? Let us know your thoughts across our social media channels.
The Resident Evil 2 Remake will release for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on January 25th, 2019.
