Rockstar Games Is ‘Committed To Single Player Experiences’

Rockstar has become synonymous with online sandbox experiences. From the dusty dualling grounds of Red Dead Online to the competitive crime scene of GTA Online, the company is always working to enhance the experience of its multiplayer games. Even though online multiplayer is a big moneymaker, Take-Two’s CEO Stauss Zelnick has stressed that Rockstar’s single player escapades will continue to receive investment [via PCGamesN].

During a recent earnings call, Zelnick reassured fans of solo gameplay, stating the following:

The folks at Rockstar Games intended to create a powerful single-player experience a story-driven experience, and Rockstar has always been known for great stories and great single-player experiences and then developed in addition, a massive multiplayer opportunity over the past years.

The CEO of Rockstar’s parent company then went on to address the company’s overall stance on multiplayer and whether it should be prioritised:

I think it’s a reminder, not that we needed one, that Rockstar Games can do both of those things at the highest possible level of execution in our business. There was, I think, there was an argument just a couple years ago, not around here, not in this shop, but in some of our competitors’ offices, that single-player is dead, that it’s all about multiplayer. We didn’t believe that I said specifically and publicly that we didn’t believe that, our labels don’t believe that.

We deliver an array of experiences that range from hyper casual mobile, to the most complex, the most robust, single-player and multiplayer experiences. And we intend to continue doing that.

Hopefully, this is something that is reflected in the likes of GTA 6 or Red Dead Redemption Remastered. Both games are rumoured Rockstar projects. Perhaps the company’s dedication to single player narratives means that we could even see games like Bully make a return.

While Rockstar does make great immersive playgrounds, it’s important to acknowledge the developer’s skills when it comes to storytelling.
