Rumour Claims Xbox Series X Will Be Cheaper Than You Think

We’ve yet to hear any official prices for the Xbox Series X or either version of the PlayStation 5, but speculation is as rife as ever. It feels a lot like Microsoft and Sony are locked in a game of Chicken, with neither party willing to show their hand (and price) before the other. However, the consoles are coming Holiday 2020, so it’s only a matter of time before someone folds.

For now, all we have is rumours, and one rumour in particular suggests that the Xbox Series X isn’t going to be as expensive as you might have been thinking – and that there’ll be an ever cheaper model available.

As always with leaks and rumours, take the news with a pinch of salt for now!

The rumour comes from Beyond3D forum user, Eastmen, [via WCCFTech] who claims to have insider information on the new Xbox consoles. (Note that Eastmen has been pretty accurate with Microsoft info in the past, so they’re a fairly reliable source). They state that Xbox may be looking to undercut Sony, in an attempt to sway more people to their next-gen offering.

Speaking of the budget model, they said: “Last I heard it be half the price of the XSX and last I heard MS were prepared for a $400 XSX. I am not sure what the final price will be. I think if Sony is $500/$600 MS may try to go in at $200/$400/$500 but we will see.”

For reference, the Xbox One X is selling for around $499 USD, or £449 in the UK. For a brand-new console (even a budget model) to come in cheaper than that would be…well, unheard of.

Honestly, I’m expecting around the £500 mark for each of the higher-end console, with maybe a £100 cheaper version for disc-less, so if these rumours are correct, I’ll be seriously impressed. If this turns out to be correct, Microsoft will be taking a pretty huge L here, so how the company would plan to make up for that would be interesting to see.
