You might not have expected a game that takes Shrek and makes it a horror game, but it’s real, and it’s surprisingly terrifying.
While Silent Hills ultimately got cancelled, the lasting effects of P.T. can be felt widely across indie horror games. There are plenty of games that try to capture those claustrophobic vibes. But you might not have expected anyone to use Shrek as a basis for a horror game.
Called 5 Nights At Shrek’s Hotel (the inspiration for the name is pretty clear), it’s a comedy horror game from developer RenderPi. In it, the player checks into a hotel run by the many-layered ogre known as Shrek. But everything isn’t exactly as it seems, and Shrek doesn’t look quite like his usual self.
what’s the game like?
Similarly to Five Nights At Freddy’s, the game sees you trying to survive five nights at the dilapidated hotel. Though being 3D, it’s a bit more involved, seeing you do things like cleaning, or tracking down onions. Eventually though, something comes after you (it’s Shrek), and the tension ramps up.
It’s quite a short game, you could pretty easily run through the entire thing in one sitting. There are some flashing lights in the game so it is worth being cautious if you have any kind of photosensitivity.
This isn’t the only time that Shrek has been made a bit more intimidating than he normally is. A while back, Shrek was modded in to the remake of Resident Evil 3, replacing the overbearing Nemesis. Not exactly someone you’d want to run into during a zombie apocalypse.
