Skull and Bones is back – here’s what we’re most excited for

Not an RPG

Now that we’ve looked at some of the promising aspects of Skull and Bones, let’s look at some of the elements we’re more sceptical about. For starters, Ubisoft is pretty clear that the key gameplay mechanic of Skull and Bones is the combat. For that reason, it rules out a lot of gameplay styles that other pirate simulators have exceeded in.

For example, if you’re a fan of role playing as a pacifist trader in Sea of Thieves, you’ll be disappointed to learn that you probably won’t get too far only participating in trading missions in Skull and Bones. It would have been nice to see more opportunities for player expression through gameplay mechanics rather than cosmetic and combat customisation.

Materials Galore

Another area that mildly concerns us is the resource gathering aspect of Skull and Bones. To upgrade your ship, you’ll obviously need to earn currency to purchase your new items. However, you’ll also need crafting materials. These can be found by attacking trade route ships, but you’ll also need to scour coastlines to harvest them.

It remains to be seen if these items are common or whether they’ll be a bit of a grind to acquire. However, our initiall impression is that they appear to be mild busy work that doesn’t require all that enticing gameplay to acquire.

We’re certainly happy to be proven wrong on these points that we’re less keen on with Skull and Bones, Thankfully, we won’t have to wait much longer until we get our hands on the game to find out. It releases later this year on 8th November 2022.
