Sony has sold over 9 million PlayStation 5 consoles since it launched last November, according to a report by VGChartz.
The PlayStation 5 has had something of an interesting first year so far. From issues with manufacturing to resellers swiping all available stock, this console generation is definitely one for the history books. However, despite numerous hurdles, PlayStation 5 sales are still going strong, and the console’s latest 9 million sales milestone is a testament to the console’s success.

So, how does this compare to other consoles on the market? Well, Microsoft’s Xbox Series X/S has sold 5.3 million units so far, which is still a respectable figure. While Microsoft’s sales figures are substantially lower than Sony’s, there’s a chance that some Xbox fans have opted to use Xbox Game Pass for PC, rather than buy a console.
On the other hand, the Nintendo Switch is an entirely different story. Despite launching back in 2017, the little handheld that could managed to sell 392,790 during the first week of June 2021. This is almost double that of the PS5’s sales figures, which come in at 199,629. While availability and pricing is definitely a factor in the Switch’s ongoing success, perhaps gamers aren’t necessarily looking for high-tech experience this generation.

Who knows, perhaps the PlayStation 5 will eventually become the best selling console of all time. While Sony’s hardware currently holds the title of “fastest-selling” console, it’ll be interesting to see how increased stock affects the situation.
