The image was first published by the New York Times and features actors Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg. According to the publication, Sony is spending $120 million on the Uncharted adaptation, which is based on the Naughty Dog game from 2007.

However, the new flick won’t be a shot for shot retelling. Instead, the film will apparently serve as a prequel to the story gamers know and love.

While video game adaptations aren’t anything new, Uncharted will be the first film to be produced by PlayStation Productions. The new studio will be tasked with adapting various PlayStation franchises for screens both big and small, in partnership with Sony Pictures. According to the studio’s head, Asad Qizilbash, PlayStation Productions has three goals that it hopes to achieve [via New York Times]:

“We have three objectives. Grow audience size for games. Bring product to Sony Pictures. Showcase collaboration.”

However, when Qizilbash was asked whether a cinematic flop could harm PlayStation’s reputation, he admitted that “It’s risky,” while proclaiming “, But I think we can do it.”

If you’re familiar with video game movie adaptations, then you’ll already know they’re hit and miss. Some films like the original Mortal Kombat are held in high regard for being quirky, while others like the Super Mario Bros flick are lost in translation. That being said, the industry has definitely got better at adapting video games for the big screen, which is due to the evolution of interactive entertainment.

Hopefully, Sony’s Uncharted film will prove that video game stories are worthy of the big screen. However, while Uncharted is definitely movie material, not every game should be transformed into a feature film. Whether not Sony will release this sooner than later remains to be seen!
