Sony Says MediEvil Remake ‘Feels Like Dark Souls’

Sony’s amping up the hype for its upcoming dose of nostalgia in the MediEvil remake – by comparing it to the notoriously difficult Dark Souls series.

Over on the PlayStation blog, SIEE Content Producer Gillen McAllister has weighed in on the game and how it plays so far, writing: “One of the biggest surprises is how MediEvil feels like Dark Souls… despite it releasing over a decade before From Software’s challenging fantasy epic.

“…For one, MediEvil’s levels are compact labyrinths packed with secrets and shortcuts.Secondly, the game is tough. This is no brainless hack and slash romp: single enemies can do considerable damage, while mobs can quickly send the unwary back to the grave.

“…For From Software fans or even anyone curious about gaming’s often knotted genealogy, MediEvil presents a unique opportunity to experience an early, alternative take on a now-revered game design style.”

The MediEvil remake is – according to Sony – completely rebuilt “from the grave up,” offering a modern take on the 1998 classic game we all know and love.

GameByte had the opportunity to go hands-on with the MediEvil remake over at Gamescom 2019, and our very own Brett Claxton definitely had a different opinion on the title…

Brett said: “For better or for worse it’s very much like the original. It plays like a PS1 game, meaning it’s a little clunky. It’s not that it’s difficult, it’s that it’s a little cumbersome. It did hit the nostalgia though, and it’ll definitely please a lot of people who want to see what the fuss is all about.”

We won’t have too long to wait to get our hands on the finished product though.
