Although Spider-Man’s future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was uncertain just a few weeks ago, it seems that he’s well and truly back in the game with Sony already planning out his future in the entire world.
In a recent interview with Fandom, Venom director Ruben Fleischer hinted that Sony is already well on the way to working Spider-Man into the Venom timeline, admitting the company is “building towards” a showdown between Tom Hardy’s Venom and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man.
“That’s where it’s all going to lead,” Fleischer told the publication.
The director also said that Spider-Man’s role in the MCU had an impact on Venom, explaining that Venom’s origin story had to be changed thanks to Sony’s Deal with Marvel.
“[In] the comics, he evolved from Spider-Man but because of the Marvel-Sony thing we weren’t able to that. And so the thing I think it’s building towards, and will be exciting to see, is when they actually do confront each other,” he said.
Fleischer won’t be returning to direct the Venom sequel, which instead has Andy Serkis helming the project.
As for Holland’s Spidey showing up in the Venom sequel…well, it’s not looking too hopeful.
While Holland was MIA for the first movie, recent comments from Kevin Feige definitely imply he could at least cameo in the upcoming sequel. We already know Woody Harrelson will be back as the unhinged Cletus Kasady and presumably transform into Carnage to become the movie’s big bad. Holland’s involvement in Venom 2 would undoubtedly open the floodgates to his future in the Venom-Verse.
Feige said: “[Spider-Man] also happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse you never know what surprises the future might hold.”
Only time will tell!
