Splinter Cell is a beloved franchise. Fans have talked positively about the exploits of stealthy Sam Fisher since his debut in the world of gaming in 2002. Despite that we still haven’t had a new entry in the franchise since 2013. Fans hoped that Ubisoft Forward this weekend would give Sam Fisher and co at least one outing on the current generation of consoles.
Sam Fisher did make an appearance at Ubisoft Forward but it wasn’t in the form of a new game announcement. Instead it was in the form of more information on Elite Squad. An action RPG that’s making its way to mobile on 27th August.
This is the first we’ve seen of Elite Squad. In fact we first heard about it a year ago at E3. Alongside Sam Fisher there’s also characters from Ghost Recon, The Division and Rainbow Six making an appearance.
The internet didn’t respond excitedly to Elite Squad but at least the memes that followed were as wonderful as you’d expect.
I’m remaining optimistic though that it might be quite a fun game. It’s a shame it isn’t a new Splinter Cell, especially with Ubisoft’s other stealthy franchise Assassin’s Creed moving further away from stealth with Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, but it’s nice to see Sam Fisher still around in some form. Who knows. Maybe if there’s a hunger for a mobile Sam Fisher we might get to see it on home consoles and PC soon!?
