SpongeBob SquarePants has inspired upcoming horror game, director says

The Callisto Protocol seemingly takes inspiration from SpongeBob SquarePants. Now there’s something I never thought I’d say today.

The Callisto Protocol is considered to be a spiritual successor to Dead Space. After all, it is from the creators of the critically acclaimed sci-fi horror franchise. In turn, Dead Space is also inspired by the likes of John Carpenter’s The Thing, Alien(s) as well as Event Horizon.

Black Iron Prison vs Bikini Bottom!

However, who honestly saw a comparison of The Callisto Protocol and the children’s animated series SpongeBob SquarePants being made? We certainly never saw that one coming. Yet, it seems Black Iron Prison and Bikini Bottom might be one and the same. Ok, that comparison might be a little dramatic.

In an interview with the UK newspaper outlet, The Sun, they got to speak to the character director of The Callisto Protocol, Glauco Longhi.

Some creatures came from the art perspective, though, like, Hey, let’s just do something that is very crazy looking. And then we put that in the game and find a way of making it work,” Longhi told The Sun.

Even some cartoons, like SpongeBob. We look at cartoons on the stylisation and movement because, although it’s super real and immersive, we stylised a lot of things to make them more appealing.

He continued: “So some of the movements, and in the case of the gore, the blood, and how we remove the limbs, there’s a push of style to emphasise some of these actions.

Longhi then spoke about how some cartoons make great use of “strong silhouettes,” adding “Cartoons do that very well. Disney, Pixar, or whatever – they give you the message right away. If there’s a fast character, you get it right away [from the] strong silhouettes.

The Callisto Protocol arrives this week!

So, there you have it, The Callisto Protocol has more than one inspiration than just Dead Space, The Thing and Event Horizon. However, I’d pick The Callisto Protocol over Disney’s Frozen any day of the week!

In related news, last week there was confusion surrounding death animations being locked behind a paywall. Thankfully, however, that is not the case as confirmed by Striking Distance Studios CEO and director of The Callisto Protocol, Glen Schofield.

Are you looking forward to this spiritual successor to Dead Space? Let us know across our social media channels. The Callisto Protocol releases this week on December 2nd for PC, PlayStation and Xbox.
