Parasite Eve is coming back, as an NFT

In November 2022, Parasite Eve fans were excited at the prospect of the beloved JRPG horror series making a comeback. Square Enix registered trademarks hinting at its return. Sadly, however, those newly registered trademarks were for NFTs.

What’s more, as reported by Eurogamer, Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda has suggested that 2023 could be the year of the NFT for the giant Japanese company.

In a New Year’s letter, Matsuda stated that 2023 will be the year of “major evolution and transformation” with “multiple blockchain games based on original IPs under development”.

Square Enix and NFTs are taking the Mickey!

So if you were hoping that Parasite Eve would be Square Enix’s only NFT victim, then think again. This means franchises such as Final Fantasy, and Kingdom Hearts could be set for a major Blockchain and NFT push.

Blockchain has been an object of exhilaration and a source of turmoil, but with that in the rearview mirror, we hope that blockchain games will transition to a new stage of growth in 2023,” Matsuda said.

The president went on to push his positive perspective on how Blockchain and NFTs will impact the video game industry.

Keeping a steady eye on these environmental changes while considering from a higher-level perspective what Web 3.0.” He added: “blockchain entertainment is actually all about presenting a different vista than if we focus on them solely in technological or speculative investment terms.

As I said in last year’s New Year’s letter, if we consider traditional gaming to have been centralised, then blockchain gaming must operate based on a self-sustaining decentralised model. It is that concept, that philosophy that I see to be key.
