Square Enix has reportedly filed various trademarks, all of which relate to FF7. Could spin-off games be in the works?

According to a report by Gematsu, the RPG publishing powerhouse registered three FF7 trademarks in total: “Ever Crisis”, “The First Soldier” and the “The Shinra Electric Power Company” logo.
While trademarking words, phrases and titles can be a smart business move, it’s hard to ignore the prospect that Square Enix could be working on something new and exciting.
Since the trademarked terms are so specific, it’s entirely possible that the truth behind Square Enix’s actions could be found within their meaning.

First off, “Ever Crisis” sounds remarkably similar to the 2004 spin-off “Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII” (which served as a PSP prequel to the original title). Could we be about to see a similar spinoff related to Final Fantasy 7 Remake? Let’s hope so!
The term “The First Soldier” relates to the game’s main antagonist, Sepheroph, which also just so happens to sound a bit like a title.
Again, it’s easy to imagine this is related to some sort of spin-off, especially since Square Enix has been focused on reimagining Final Fantasy VII through its 2020 Remake.

The third trademark filed by Square Enix is simply the logo for “The Shinra Electric Power Company”. Shinra are corporate villains that feature throughout the Final Fantasy VII franchise.
A trademark of this kind could be used for any number of things but considering the company it keeps, it could somehow be part of Square Enix’s mysterious intentions.
Fans have begun trying to solve the meaning of these trademarks, with particular attention being paid to the way these trademarks and previous spin-off titles seem to match up alphabetically.

By taking the initials of each spin-off, such as Advent Children, Before Crisis, Crisis Core and Dirge of Cerberus, it seems like “Ever Crisis” seems to fit straight into the pattern.
Whether any of this is intentional on Square Enix’s behalf is unknown at this point. The trademarks hopefully mean that we’ll be seeing some sort of FF7 news at some point in the near future. Keep your fingers crossed!
