Square Enix Responds To Claims That The Company Is Up For Sale

Square Enix has responded to claims that multiple video game companies are looking to acquire the prolific studio.

The original report came from Bloomberg Japan, where it was alleged that Square Enix might be about to be purchased with a number of companies interested in an acquisition of the Final Fantasy studio.

We’ve seen a lot of major industry buy-outs over the last year or so, with Microsoft’s acquisition of Bethesda parent company ZeniMax Media perhaps being the most notable.

According to Dr. Serkan Toto, CEO of Tokyo-based game industry consultancy KantanGames, the report caused a surge in the value of Square Enix’s stock, with lots of people wondering if Sony might be the company to buy the studio.

However, in response to the Bloomberg report, Square Enix has issued a statement that insists the company isn’t up for sale.

“Bloomberg has reported today that there is interest from several buyers to acquire Square Enix. However, this report is not based on any announcement by SQUARE ENIX HOLDINGS CO., LTD,” said the company.

“We do not consider selling off the company or any part of its businesses, nor have we received any offer from any third party to acquire the company or any part of its businesses.”

While Square Enix’s statement has quashed the rumours, for now, it’ll be interesting to see any additional reports crop up their heads in the future.
