Strauss Zelnick has a clear message for anyone who thinks Take-Two is a one-hit company. In a recent Wall Street Journal interview, the CEO was asked whether the publisher relies too heavily on GTA 6. His answer was simple: look at the facts.
A clip of the exchange has since spread across social media, with many fans praising Zelnick’s calm response.
What did the interviewer ask?
The interviewer raised a concern many investors share. She suggested that GTA 6 is Take-Two’s one big hit, and that the company doesn’t have enough other hits in its library. Then she asked Zelnick how he would knock that idea down.
It’s a fair question on the surface. GTA 6 is expected to be one of the biggest entertainment launches ever. As a result, a huge amount of Take-Two’s future rides on it.
How did Strauss Zelnick respond?
Zelnick didn’t seem rattled. Instead, he pointed straight to the numbers. “We have 15 franchises that have each sold at least 5 million units in an individual release,” he said.
He went further, too. According to Zelnick, Take-Two has “the best collection of owned intellectual property in the video game business.” He added that this shows in the company’s revenue, profits and market value.
His advice to doubters was blunt. “Examine the facts,” he said.
Which games did Zelnick list?
Zelnick then ran through Take-Two’s line-up. First, he highlighted Red Dead Redemption, calling it “a massive title.” He said the latest entry has sold over 65 million units. He also mentioned Red Dead Online and GTA Online.
Next, he turned to sport. He described NBA 2K as the second-biggest sports game worldwide and the biggest in North America. After that, he named WWE 2K, BioShock, Borderlands and Civilization.
He didn’t forget mobile, either. Thanks to Take-Two’s purchase of Zynga, the company also owns hits like Empires & Puzzles, Words With Friends and Zynga Poker. In total, Zelnick said, there are “hundreds of other titles.” He summed it up neatly: “It’s a pretty good story.”
Is the concern fair?
In truth, both sides have a point. Zelnick’s list is impressive, and few publishers can match it. Red Dead Redemption 2 alone sits among the best-selling games of all time.
However, GTA is in a league of its own. GTA 5 has sold over 200 million copies and kept GTA Online alive for more than a decade. No other Take-Two series comes close to that scale. So even with 15 million-sellers, GTA 6 will shape the company’s future more than anything else.
That pressure explains why Rockstar is so famously secretive about its projects. It also explains the intense attention on every GTA 6 detail, from the map to the debate around Lucia.
What happens next for Take-Two?
GTA 6 finally launches on November 19 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Its timing is tricky, with console prices at record highs and next-gen hardware like the PS6 facing soaring costs. Even so, analysts expect huge sales.
If GTA 6 lives up to the hype, the “one hit” worry may not matter much. After all, when your one hit is GTA, it’s a pretty good hit to have.
