Super Mario Bros Film Delayed To Spring 2023

Nintendo has announced that the Super Mario Bros animated film, originally set to release this year, has been delayed.

On the official Nintendo of America account, Shigeru Miyamoto, creator of Mario, delivered the news. “This is Miyamoto. After consulting with Chris-san, my partner at Illumination on the Super Mario Bros film, we decided to move the global release to Spring 2023–April 28 in Japan and April 7 in North America. My deepest apologies but I promise it will be well worth the wait.

The movie was originally meant to release on December 21, meaning it’s roughly a four month delay overall.

Who’s In it again?

Presumably this is a good thing as it will hopefully give the animators more time to get everything right. Though it’s arguably more of a good thing for us, as it means we get four more months to accept that Chris Pratt is playing Mario in the film.

Announced in a Nintendo Direct last year, the cast of the film features Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day (Pacific Rim) as Luigi, Anya Tayloy-Joy (The Witch) as Princess Peach, and Keegan-Michael Key (Key and Peele) as Toad. It will also see Jack Black as Bowser, and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong.

There was a bit of blowback when Pratt was confirmed to be Mario. Though unfortunately there’s not much we can do now. Maybe these extra four months are to help him get his wahoo right.
