In an announcement that came pretty much out of nowhere, Square Enix has revealed the existence of a brand-new Kingdom Hearts game – and it’s coming this year.
Yesterday (Jan 22) saw a Twitter account by the name of “Project Xehanort” pop up, revealing the working title for a “new KINGDOM HEARTS experience planned for Spring 2020!’
Disappointingly for some KH fans, this isn’t going to be a fully-fledged AAA game and instead is headed straight for iOS and Android. Also the use of the word “experience” makes it sound more like a form of DLC for the main games, rather than a standalone title.
Still, we’ve seen a slew of exciting and innovative mobile games of late, so I’m still pretty excited to see what the KH team has to offer.
As you can see in the tweet above, Square Enix is hyping up the release with a “Guess the Name” campaign. Over on the official website, the company explains: “The Guess the Name Twitter Campaign is here! If you can guess what the name of the upcoming Project Xehanort title, you can win big!”

Reactions to the news have been mixed, with lots of people divided on whether or not a mobile Kingdom Hearts game is the right direction for the much-loved series.
Despite the massive leaps that mobile gaming has made over recent years, it seems that making the leap to mobile still leaves a bitter taste in the mouths of fans.
That being said, there’s still a lot of hype for the mysterious project, and it’ll definitely be exciting to see where Square is planning to take the franchise in the future.
