The Last Of Us 2 Director Hinted At The Fates Of Joel & Ellie Back In 2017

The Last of Us Part 2 is just a couple of months away from launch (*squeal*) and we all want to know one thing: what’s going to happen to Joel and Ellie in this dark and dangerous world?

Well, that very question was addressed way back in 2017, and Naughty Dog top dog and TLOU Part 2 director, Neil Druckmann had some very interesting insights at the time.

Speaking during a PlayStation Experience panel, the director said some things that, with hindsight, seem a little…worrying?

“There are stakes – there are real stakes,” Druckmann said at the time. “With The Last of Us, no one is safe. We want people to go into The Last of Us: Part 2 especially with this theme [of hate] and what we’re trying to say with this game, is knowing that no one is safe – not even these two [Joel and Ellie].”

Looking at the comments with a little hindsight has led some people to believe that either Joel or Ellie is set to kick the bucket in the next chapter of the saga.

A YouTuber and TLOU fan by the name of whereisthetakis speculates that Druckmann’s comments could point to multiple endings, potentially seeing some characters survive in one ending yet dying in another.

We haven’t heard anything about multiple endings from Naughty Dog, and it would be a departure from what we’re used to seeing from ND games. However, it’s definitely something that would appeal to a lot of players!

What do you think Druckmann’s comments could mean in terms of The Last of Us Part 2’s gameplay and story? Would you like to see multiple endings for the second chapter in this tale?
