Take-Two Goes On A Grand Theft Auto Mod Massacre

Rockstar Games parent company Take-Two has gone on a Grand Theft Auto mod massacre, further fuelling rumours that remasters are on the way.

As unfortunate as it is, mods being shut down by big publishers is nothing new. Over the years the Grand Theft Auto franchise has had one of the best modding communities out there. Just about every release from Rockstar Games has been supported by a wealth of fantastic community mods.

However, in recent months rumours of various instalments being officially remastered by Rockstar Games have been generating traction.

Just this week alone, Take-Two revealed during an investor’s relation report that “three unannounced” games inspired by “new iterations of previously released titles” were in the works. Suggesting that remasters, ports or remakes were on the way.

As reported by Kotaku, Take-Two has been hitting GTA mods with DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) strikes. The timing of the strikes is quite suspicious and could hint that Take-Two is getting rid of community mods in preparation for official releases.

The timing is suspicious

A statement was posted on the mod repository LibertyCity this week. “All these mods were ports of the locations, cities, cars, and characters of old Rockstar Games titles on newer Grand Theft Auto engines,” wrote LibertyCity admin jdayke. “The mods won’t be available to download on LibertyCity anymore.

The mods that were issued DMCA strikes included community remasters for GTA 3, GTA: Vice City, GTA: San Andreas, and GTA 5.

Kotaku has reached out to Rockstar Games for a comment on the recent DMCA strikes, but I doubt a response will be issued.

What are your thoughts on the DMCA strikes from Take-Two? Does it mean that official remasters are on the way soon? Well, according to our article earlier in the week, Take-Two aims to release the “three unannounced” games by March 31st, 2022.
