Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us Part 2 has officially received its ESBR rating, and the mentions of “sexual content” seemingly lent credence to the fan theory that the new character of Dina may be a victim of sexual violence in the game.
However, these theories are looking less likely than ever, as the ESBR rating seemingly debunks them completely.
Over on Reddit, one gamer discussed the possibility of the fan theory coming to light, stating that since the game has not been rated for sexual violence, we almost definitely won’t be seeing any mention of rape in the plot.
The Redditor posted: “Just a disclaimer, there’s a difference between ‘Sexual Content’ and ‘Strong Sexual Content’ on ESRB ratings. Sexual Content is described as ‘Non-explicit depictions of sexual behavior, possibly including partial nudity’
“So no explicit sex scenes. The Nudity label is referring to scenes like this and this, not Ellie and Dina getting it on.
“Edit: There’s also no ‘Sexual Violence’ rating for this game. Those ‘Ellie gets raped’ theories are not happening.”
One of the most prevalent – and unconfirmed – theories about what will happen in the second part of Ellie’s adventures comes from what motivates her to go on her revenge spree. Thanks to the many trailers focused on her relationship with new character, Dina, many have speculated that Dina is the one who sparks Ellie’s need for revenge.
The two most-believed theories at this point are that Dina will either be murdered, or sexually assaulted in some form, causing Ellie to spiral into her violent killing spree. However, this is actually looking less likely than ever.
With only a couple of months left until the release of The Last of Us Part 2, we thankfully won’t have too long to wait to find out what happens in the game.
The Last of Us Part 2 releases exclusively on PlayStation 4, May 29 2020.
