The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is now four years old, first releasing on this day (March 3) for the Wii U and Nintendo Switch in 2017.
With the current global pandemic still in full swing, the past 12 months or so have gone by fast enough, but four years since the release of Breath of the Wild! That just seems crazy.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a critically acclaimed title in a series that celebrates its 35th anniversary this year. However, not everyone loves Breath of the Wild, largely down to the perishable weapon mechanic, but that’s a topic for another day.
Thankfully, for the most part, Breath of the Wild seems to be loved by the majority of fans and critics from across the globe.
While not perfect, Breath of the Wild is one of my favorite games in the series, and despite playing it initially on the less-superior version for the Wii U, I adored its sense of adventure.
Don’t get me wrong, The Legend of Zelda series has always been about adventure, but I just loved how this game threw you into its new world with little to no explanation as to what was going on. Hyrule itself is a true open-world that urges players to explore freely from the get-go.
Our hero Link awakens from a 100-year sleep to find that Hyrule is not what it used to be. During the long slumber, Ganon has returned and somehow gained control over the mythical creatures known as the “Divine Beasts”.
Breath of the Wild proved to be so popular that it even received two DLC bundles as part of an expansion pass with The Master Trials and The Champions Ballad, a first for the beloved series.
During E3 2019, a sequel to Breath of the Wild was announced which was again a first for the series, as no game in the franchise has ever received a numbered sequel.
Sadly, however, other than having a teaser trailer, we’re still waiting on further details and more gameplay on Breath of the Wild 2. Hopefully, 2021 will be the year when we learn more about the highly anticipated sequel.
With the 35th anniversary celebrations, an HD remaster of the 2011’s Skyward Sword for the Nintendo Wii was announced for the Switch. It drops on July 16th (you can pre-order a copy here from the GameByte Shop).
