The PS5 Will Be Pretty Big, But For A Very Good Reason

The newly-revealed PlayStation 5 is apparently a big of a big boy, being even larger than its current-gen brother, the PlayStation 4. Although a lot of people have balked at the potential size of the next console, it seems as though there’s one very good reason as to why he’s so large – and it’s all to do with combating overheating.

The news comes from Matt MacLaurin, vice president of user experience design at PlayStation, who’s been talking about all things console-related over on . As spotted by VG247, MacLaurin spoke a little about the size of the PS5, and how its chonk is all there to help the system keep cool.

MacLaurin was asked why the PS5 needs to be “bigger and bulkier” than the current model, to which MacLaurin responded that it’s all down to the console’s “thermals”.

“This gen is little supercomputers,” he said. “While the 7nm process delivers amazing heat performance for the power, the power is very extreme.”

He later added: “This tech is still so fresh it throws a lot of heat so we need room to dissipate.”

Considering just how hot my PS4 Pro is currently running, I’m happy to sacrifice a little space to keep things runnings smoothly!

We’re not entirely sure just how big the PS5 is at the moment, though Reddit has speculated based on the size of the DualSense controller. Reddit user GREBO7 has created an infographic on what they believe to be a fairly accurate comparison of all the Sony and Microsoft consoles to date.
