Ubisoft has published information about its collaboration with Lucasfilm Games. The company known for the likes of Assassin’s Creed has stated that the Star Wars project will be a “story-driven” experience. The game will be crafted by Massive Entertainment.

The news comes from a Ubisoft interview with Massive Entertainment’s managing director, David Polfeldt, and creative director Julian Gerighty. When asked what the duo could tell us so far, Gerighty responded with the following:

“Right now, we are in the beginning of our new journey, so we are still working out many of the details. But, what we can tell you is that this will be a story-driven open-world game.”

Massive Entertainment is known for its work on Tom Clancy’s The Division, which has an emphasis on collaborative multiplayer. Gerighty acknowledged this, stating that this project would be a “departure from the world of The Division” and that he aims to create something “completely different” from what he’s worked on in the past.

As well as featuring a story-driven open-world, Ubisoft’s Star Wars project will also take advantage of the Snowdrop engine. David Polfeldt claims the engine will “visually bring Star Wars to life in a way that no game has ever done before.

Story-based Star Wars games are anything but new within the industry. Games like Knights of the Old Republic, The Force Unleashed and Jedi: Fallen Order are prime examples of how well the franchise works when given a strong narrative structure.

Just in case you need some reassurance that Ubisoft has placed this project into safe hands, Julian Gerighty had this to say about his relationship with Star Wars:

“A New Hope was the first movie I saw at the cinema, the first VHS that I wore out, the first action figures that I craved. The characters, the planets, the ships, and the timeless stories became so familiar and loved that I have no doubt that they have become part of who I am.”

While Lucasfilm Games will likely work with various publishers and developers in the future, it’s exciting to see what Ubisoft can craft using the Star Wars formula, especially considering the calibre of games they have under their belt to date.

Are you looking forward to Ubisoft’s take on the Star Wars franchise, or should Disney’s exclusivity deal with EA have continued?
