Valve co-founder, Gabe Newell, has revealed he’s more of an Xbox Series X fan than a PlayStation 5 lover.
Appearing on The Project, Newell was asked which of the two next-gen consoles is most floating his boat right now, to which the Valve tog dog quickly – and without hesitation – cited the Xbox Series X as his most intriguing choice.
When asked why, Newell replied: “Because it’s better!”
“I don’t have a stake in that race,” he explained. “Obviously, we do most of our development on personal computers, but of the two I would definitely go with an Xbox.”
It’s definitely an interesting choice, especially considering that Steam competitor, the Epic Games Store, seems to have a pretty big stake in the Sony console. Epic Games’ in-development Unreal Engine 5 was used to showcase the power of the PS5 with a tech demo, and it’s since been revealed that Sony has purchased a 1.4% stake in Epic.

On the flip side, Xbox has made no secret of plans to introduce and welcome as many Xbox gamers to Series X as possible. Many of the company’s exclusives will be playable on PC thanks to Xbox Games Pass PC, so it’s possible that this is more exciting idea for Newell than the PS5 and Epic collaboration.

We still don’t know all the details on either console, with neither Sony nor Microsoft showing their hand when it comes to the cost of the things. The two appear to be locked in a game of chicken, with neither of them willing to reveal their price point first. This will have to change at some point though, as both consoles are due to land on store shelves in Holiday 2020. The clock’s ticking, guys!
