The news follows AT&T’s previous attempts to sell Warner’s games division back in 2020. The move means that both WarnerMedia and Discovery will become “one of the largest global streaming players”. As a result, only some aspects of Warner Bros. Games will remain with AT&T. On Monday, a spokesperson from the company touched on the situation during a conversation with Axios:

“WB Games is getting broken up somehow due to AT&T’s WarnerMedia-Discovery sale/merger. “Some of the gaming arm will stay with AT&T and some will go with the new company,” rep tells Axios’ @sarafischer. No further info. WB Games lists 11 studios, games for all kinds of IP, devices”

In a recent statement, AT&T and Discovery outlined its goals for the merger and what it hopes to achieve:

“The transaction will combine WarnerMedia’s storied content library of popular and valuable IP with Discovery’s global footprint, trove of local-language content and deep regional expertise across more than 200 countries and territories.

“The new company will be able to invest in more original content for its streaming services, enhance the programming options across its global linear pay TV and broadcast channels, and offer more innovative video experiences and consumer choices.”

At the moment, it’s unclear how the merger will affect WB Games’ upcoming release schedule. The publisher’s 2022 endeavours include the likes of Hogwarts Legacy, the Left 4 Dead successor Back 4 Blood and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.

Hopefully, AT&T’s decision won’t prove detrimental to the talented development houses under its roof.
