‘We Should Learn from Each Other,’ Xbox Chief Praises DualSense Controller

Xbox chief Phil Spencer has praised the DualSense controller of the PS5, comparing it to another piece of innovative controller technology.

When speaking to The Verge, the executive vice-president of gaming for Microsoft made it known that he is very impressed with the DualSense controller and that the industry should “learn from each other” when it comes to hardware.

The PlayStation 5’s DualSense controller takes vibration feedback to the next level of immersion with its haptics, so much so that once you get used to the next-gen controller it’s quite difficult going back to the PS4’s DualShock 4.

The adaptive triggers replicate the resistance of weapons in the games you play, while the controller itself can simulate different weights and even in-game weather patterns like rain. As an example, when using Ellie’s bow in The Last of Us Part 2 you will feel the tension of the bow being pulled back before firing.

The haptic feedback creates vibrations so that you can feel the distinction between using a shotgun or an automatic assault rifle. In some games such as Bethesda’s Deathloop, if a gun jams in-game, so too will the triggers of the DualSense controller.

Phil Spencer told The Verge: “I applaud what [Sony] did with the controller, not actually for – well, I shouldn’t say not for the specifics of the controller, but more than just the specifics of the controller.”

Spencer added: “I think for all of us in the industry, we should learn from each other and the innovation that we all push on, whether it’s distribution of business model like Game Pass, or controller tech, or the Wii back in the day, which clearly had an impact on us when we went off and did Kinect and Sony did the Move.
