Capcom has just made the very unexpected announcement that nobody was waiting for – a live-action Mega Man movie is officially in the works.
Writing on its official site, Capcom writes: “Based on the influential and globally beloved Mega Man franchise, Capcom aims to appeal to a diverse audience, including not only game players but action movie fans as well, with an adaptation that maintains the world of the Mega Man games, while incorporating the grand production and entertainment value that Hollywood movies are known for.”
Coming from 20th Century Fox, the movie is “tentatively titled MEGA MAN,” and will be written and directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman.
There are some pretty big names already attached to the project, including producers Chernin Entertainment of the Planet of the Apes series and Masi Oka of Heroes.
Capcom has stated it “aims to appeal to a diverse audience, including not only game players but action movie fans as well, with an adaptation that maintains the world of the Mega Man games, while incorporating the grand production and entertainment value that Hollywood movies are known for.”
The announcement seems to have divided Mega Man fans – unsurprisingly, considering some of the video game movies we’ve seen in the past…
