Achievement Leak Suggests GoldenEye 007 Getting A Remaster

Finally, after years of rumours and speculation, it seems that the GoldenEye 007 remake is finally coming. But will it be worth the wait?

Over the weekend, as reported by True Achievements, the achievement list for the rumoured GoldenEye 007 remake appeared like an RKO out of nowhere. Interestingly, this achievement list is apparently different to the previously cancelled game. Though it’s possible that this will still be the cancelled XBLA game, with updated achievements.

Rumours of the GoldenEye 007 remake have been around for years, including the aforementioned cancelled version. Back in April 2021, hope that the remake would be revived was sparked by a renewed trademark.

However, I think it’s fair to say that the sudden appearance of the achievement list is quite possibly the most convincing evidence yet that the long-awaited release is on the way.

Furthermore, due to complicated licensing agreements, it seems that the GoldenEye 007 remake will only be released for Xbox, and not Nintendo.

Why not Nintendo?

The original GoldenEye 007 became a cult-hit when it was released for the Nintendo 64 back in 1997. However, it has been reported that due to copyrights owned by Danjaq and MCM Studios, releasing the remake has not been a straightforward process. It’s also worth keeping in mind that the original game was developed by Rare, which is now owned by Microsoft.

That all being said, will the expected GoldenEye 007 remaster be worth the wait? Sure, this is considered to be one of the most iconic first-person shooters of all time, but will its gameplay stand the test of time?

GoldenEye 007 was developed from the ground up to be used on the somewhat unconventional N64 controller and was never intended for the common controller of today. In a perfect world, if this remaster was to finally happen, it would be great to have a choice of classic and modern controls to choose from.

Furthermore, we don’t know for sure whether this will be a remake or a remaster at this time. But hopefully, we’ll learn more in the coming weeks with an official announcement. Until then, we must take rumours and leaks with a pinch of salt.

GoldenEye did receive a remake back in the 2000s for the Wii, and later the PS3 and Xbox 360, which reimagined the 1995 film for a modern audience. It changed Bond’s actor from Pierce Brosnan to Daniel Craig and had a gameplay style similar to Call of Duty.
