It has been revealed that Nintendo Switch exclusive Animal Crossing: New Horizons was the second best-selling boxed video game of 2020 in the UK.
The information comes courtesy of Gamesindustry.biz and most impressively, Animal Crossing: New Horizons wasn’t the second best-selling game on the Switch (spoiler alert, it was number one), but it was actually also the second best-selling game across all platforms.
In almost every year the top three selling games would be dominated by FIFA, Call of Duty and Assassin’s Creed.
However for 2020, the top three selling boxed video games were dominated by Nintendo, which is probably a result of a sharp increase of Nintendo Switch sales during the launch of the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Taking up the top three spots in UK physical sales across all platforms were FIFA 21 coming in at first place, Animal Crossing: New Horizons in second and, quite surprisingly, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe in third place.
Notable mentions include Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War in fifth place, The Last of Us Part 2 in seventh and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla in ninth.

I’ve never played an Animal Crossing game in my life but I know it’s a beloved series and if there’s one game that has stood out during the times of the global pandemic and isolation, it’s the relaxed nature and unique social interaction of Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
