Following continued backlash from an offensive scene in the new Monster Hunter movie, the scene has now been pulled globally, as reported by Deadline.
Just last week the production company of the Monster Hunter movie Constantin Film apologised for the dialogue that may have caused offence, and as a result the scene was edited out of the Chinese theatrical release.
However, the scene has been removed from all versions of the Monster Hunter movie worldwide.
The dialogue in question which is spoken in the movie from Asian-American actor & rapper Jin Au-Yeung aka MC Jin reads: “What are my knees?… What kind of knees are these?… Chi-knees!“
The reason that this particular line has caused offence is that it’s said in some English speaking countries that this phrase is associated with a racist playground taunt that goes: “Chinese, Japanese, dirty knees, look at these?“
The actor who reads the line in the movie released a video on Instagram stating that the line was not meant to cause offence.
“It’s unfortunate that it has escalated to this level, especially since the line was intended to be uplifting,” said Jin.
He continued: “I felt a need to address this situation because what is at stake is not my career but something even more dear to my heart – my roots. I’ve spent the last 20 years using my platform to embrace and be a positive voice for my community. I am and will always be proud of my heritage.“
Paul W. S. Anderson who both writes and directs the Monster Movie released a statement on the controversial line.
“I am absolutely devastated that a line from our movie, Monster Hunter, has offended some audience members in China. I apologise for any anxiety or upset that this line and its interpretation caused. Monster Hunter was made as fun entertainment and I am mortified that anything within it has caused unintentional offense.
“We have respectfully removed the line from the movie. It was never our intention to send a message of discrimination or disrespect to anyone. To the contrary – at its heart our movie is about unity.“
The Monster Movie releases later this month in the US on December 18th and is expected to release on January 29th, 2021 in the UK due to COVID-19 causing a delay.
