A third-party PS5 faceplate company that was recently threatened by Sony to cease production of their custom faceplates has vowed to fight their corner – potentially with the help of crowdfunding.

You may remember a story that we covered just before the launch of PS5, which showcased some cool custom PS5 faceplates from a company called PlateStation5.
However, despite making it very clear that their products are third-party and are not “affiliated in any way with Sony”, the small company was contacted and instructed by Sony to change its name or they will “end up in court.”

The company changed then changed its name from PlateStation5 to CustomizeMyPlates, though this was apparently not enough. The company was then instructed to cease production of the faceplates as Sony’s intellectual property “extended to the faceplates.”
Despite the company moving from faceplates to skins, and following on from the news earlier in the month that CustomizeMyPlates.com ceased from selling their PS5 faceplates, it seems that they have had a change of heart.

CustomizeMyPlates has now told VGC that they are considering a GoFundMe campaign as a platform to bring back their custom PS5 faceplates. Crowdfunding is a popular way to bring projects to life, but it’s not clear if Sony would take legal action if the PS5 faceplate company were to do this.
While CustomizeMyPlates did not confirm whether or not they have resolved any legal dispute with Sony it seems that they are also considering a petition, telling the publication they are: “lobbying Sony to authorise us to make the plates.”

As an interesting insight to how third-party sales work, a person “at a major third-party peripheral company” told VGC that “Sony won’t be able to control this in the long run” as “there will be tons of companies making these faceplates”.
They added “Sony will be powerless to stop them” as Sony won’t be able to keep up with third-party sellers across the world.
It will be interesting to see if CustomizeMyPlates has any success going forward in selling their third-party faceplates.
