As one of the most exciting releases of the year, CD Projekt Red surely has a financial success on its hands with Cyberpunk 2077 – but a new data report suggests pre-orders are “underwhelming” right now.
As noted by TheGamer, analytics firm M Science has delved into the world of video game stats once again, this time looking into the upcoming dystopian RPG, Cyberpunk 2077.
According to the data experts, pre-sales for Cyberpunk are “31 percent below where Red Dead Redemption 2 was on a comparable-days basis, 68 days prior to launch.”
(Note that the figures here are estimates “based on cumulative digital pre-sales on Xbox and PlayStation, domestically”, and not confirmed figures from CDPR).
Now seeing as Red Dead Redemption 2 was one of the biggest selling games of the last few years – and was (almost) as anticipated as Cyberpunk – it’s definitely an interesting comparison.
However, does this mean Cyberpunk 2077 isn’t going to perform with its sales? Absolutely not. Cyberpunk is releasing on current-gen consoles in November this year, with a free update for next-gen coming later down the line. It’s possible that players are holding off on picking up the game on day one simply to secure a copy when it’s wholly ready for its next-gen upscale.
There’s also the growing mistrust of pre-ordering games, something which has been building in the video games community for some time now. Many people are vehemently opposed to pre-ordering games, with lots now refusing to do so.
Meanwhile, new controversies have arisen after it was revealed by Bloomberg that CDPR staff are having to work six day weeks in order to ship the game on time.
Pre-order figures are just a drop in the bucket when it comes to what does and doesn’t make your game a success, and it’s pretty clear that Cyberpunk 2077 is going to be shifting a lot of copies when it does release. Still, it’s definitely interesting to note!
Cyberpunk 2077 releases on November 19th, 2020 for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4. It’s also coming to Xbox Series and PS5, with a next-gen update due at some point in the future. Multiplayer is expected in 2022.
