EA has claimed that developer DICE is “way ahead” of schedule with developing Battlefield 6, with plans to reveal the game this spring [via VGC].

During a company call discussing third-quarter earnings, EA CEO Andrew Wilson boasted of the game’s new-gen capabilities, teasing of the game’s “unprecedented scale.”

Our next Battlefield experience will mark a return to all out military warfare,” said Wilson.

The game takes full advantage of the power of next generation platforms to bring massive immersive battles to life with more players than ever before. Featuring maps with unprecedented scale, the next edition of Battlefield takes all the destruction, player agency, vehicle and weapon combat that the franchise is known for and elevates it to another level. The team is focused and the game is ahead of our internal milestones.”

As for a release window, Wilson said the game should be releasing this year, with a reveal in the coming months.

We will reveal the game in the spring and deliver a defining Battlefield experience for our players in holiday 2021,” said Wilson.

EA’s CFO Blake Jorgensen then later added to the comments, stating that Battlefield 6’s development was “way ahead of where we were in prior product cycles”. So, with any luck, fans of EA’s CoD competitor will be able to put their fingers on the game’s triggers this year.

Before this announcement, rumours had been circulating regarding Battlefield 6 being a reboot, one which would support 128 player combat. These claims had been made by industry insider Tom Henderson back in August 2020. Henderson also claimed that the game was coming back from the future, ditching its previously adopted historical setting.

Andrew Wilson’s statement seems to line up with the rumours from last year, so perhaps we’re about to see big Battlefield changes. From the sounds of it, players will be battling in an environment not too dissimilar to real-life world warfare (which actually, is a little unsettling).
