Despite the PlayStation 5’s relatively small player-base, Final Fantasy 16 has become its fastest selling exclusive within its first week.
June 22 saw the worldwide release of the long-awaited Final Fantasy 16. The Square Enix title arrived to PlayStation 5 as an exclusive and within its first week of sales, has managed to overtake Returnal and Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart to become the fastest-selling game.
Final Fantasy 16 Sales
This news was announced on June 28 and revealed that FF16 had surpassed three million sales worldwide in its first week.
Although this is significantly less than the Final Fantasy 7 Remake which hit 3.5 million sales, it is worth noting that this title was available to over 100 million PS4 users. In comparison, as a PS5 exclusive, FF16 is currently only available to 40 million players worldwide.
A Cut Above The Rest
As it stands, FF16 is the PS5’s third true exclusive behind Returnal and Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart. However, it has overtaken them significantly in sales.
With Rift Apart launching in June 2021 and Returnal April 2021, they both only managed to hit 560,000 and 1.1 million copies respectively. Not only that but the Ratchet and Clank instalment took around a month to hit that milestone.
So with Final Fantasy 16 hitting three million sales in its first week, it is definitely Sony’s most successful PS5 exclusive to date. However, that is perhaps to be expected considering the Final Fantasy series is one of the most popular gaming franchises worldwide.
It also remains to be seen if the title will be making its way to PC in the future. With PS5 exclusives being locked-in for six months, it can be ported any time after that.
