According to an industry insider, development of GTA 6 has been restarted several times over the last few years.
With Grand Theft Auto V approaching its eight anniversary this year (and it’s third console release), we’re all hotly anticipating a new release in the series. Rockstar is treating us to a hefty remaster of some of the series greats, but nothing will top a brand new next-gen game.
Sadly, we’re yet to hear anything official about Grand Theft Auto 6 from Rockstar. It’s almost certainly in development – leaks are rife, after all. However, an industry inside thinks that they might know why GTA 6 is taking so long to develop.
What’s going on with GTA 6?
As first discovered by DSOG, Rockstar Mag’s Chris claims that GTA 6 has restarted development several times. According to Chris, publisher Take-Two was planning to announce the game in 2020. However, troubled development has resulted in the game getting delayed internally on multiple occasions.
One of the times when the game was reportedly restarted was when Dan Houser left the studio in March 2020. Houser was the Head Writer at Rockstar Games and is responsible for writing much of the GTA and Red Dead Redemption franchises. Although, Chris notes that elements pertaining to the story and even gameplay have been altered since as far back as 2019.

If Chris’s intel is correct, then that would explain why it’s been so long since we last heard anything from Rockstar regarding GTA. However, all of this is yet to be corroborated officially by Rockstar. Given the studio’s development track record, it’s unlikely that we’ll hear anything about the game until it’s confident about its release.
