Here is ‘Doom’ running on Microsoft Notepad

Someone has DOOM running at 60fps on Microsoft Notepad. However, at this point, as impressive as this is, are we really surprised?

In June 2022, someone actually managed to get classic DOOM running on a LEGO brick. Yes, really. So, this Microsoft Notepad port is the latest impressive adaptation of the 1993 shooter.

First, it was DOOM on a LEGO brick!

As reported by Tom’s Hardware, the talented developer that ported DOOM to Microsoft Notepad is Sam Chiet. However, what’s even more impressive, is that the developer managed to get DOOM running at a super-smooth 60fps.

Dubbed “NotepadDOOM”, the port is fully playable on the very basic Microsoft app. However, Chiet did explain that the port will “take some work to polish NotepadDOOM into something releasable, but it’ll almost certainly happen over the next couple of days.

Now it’s DOOM on a Notepad!

It is quite difficult to see DOOM running on Microsoft Notepad, but it is incredibly impressive nonetheless. If you’re familiar with classic DOOM, you can not only recognise the gameplay in action but also its instantly recognisable and iconic theme.

Furthermore, Tom’s Hardware article mentioned that as Notepad doesn’t have graphics associated with a traditional game, Chiet replaces graphics with characters and numbers to get the game running.

What port will we see next?

At this stage, it’s anyone’s guess as to what we’ll see classic DOOM ported onto next. Could we see DOOM run on an electric toothbrush or even a Tamagotchi? Unless that’s already been done, of course.

Finally, if you want to play classic DOOM via more traditional means, it’s available on just about every platform imaginable. The entire DOOM series is also available via Xbox Game Pass.
