Here’s How Well Elden Ring Will Run On PS5 And Xbox Series X

FromSoftware has revealed exactly how Elden Ring will run on next-gen consoles. The game is set to feature both a quality and performance mode on the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

Elden Ring is sadly still a few months away, though early gameplay is looking exceptional. A 15-minute gameplay reveal last week showed how the studio is advancing work on all its previous titles while also taking a bit of inspiration from Breath of the Wild. Safe to say, we absolutely can’t wait until it launches next February to play.

Something that struck us from last week’s gameplay reveal was how gorgeous the visuals were. The footage was captured on a high-end PC which led some fans to wonder if the game would look similar on consoles. Thankfully, FromSoftware has put our worries to rest after revealing the target resolution and frame rates of each of the consoles.

How will Elden Ring run on PS5 and Xbox Series X?

On the PS5, Elden Ring will target a native resolution of 4K and will run at a frame rate of 60fps. However, an addendum caveats this by saying that 60fps will only be achievable in performance mode. This likely means that the resolution will be sacrificed to meet the frame rate target. Players will have a choice as to whether they’d like to favour visual fidelity or smoothness.

The same is also true of the Xbox Series X version of Elden Ring. If you’re playing on Xbox Series S, the maximum resolution will be 1440p, though 60fps is still supported in performance mode. Interestingly, both new-gen consoles will support ray tracing, but sadly not on Xbox Series S. Ray tracing support will arrive for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X in a post launch patch.

It’s unclear whether ray tracing will be supported in performance mode, but it seems unlikely. Spider-Man: Miles Morales was one game that offered a performance version of ray traced visuals, but it was a first party title for the Sony console. With Elden Ring arriving from a third party studio, it’s unlikely that it will go the extra mile to offer a performance ray tracing mode – but I’m ready to be proven wrong.
