House of the Dragon viewers are upset over the use of Game of Thrones theme

Some of the people who’ve watched the new Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon were upset at the use of the former show’s theme song.

House of the Dragon tells the story of the Targaryens who ruled Westeros before the events of Game of Thrones. It’s already impressing viewers despite having just a couple of episodes out. However, not everyone was pleased with one of the choices made in the show.

Episode 1 of the show didn’t actually have an opening credits sequence. But when Episode 2 came out, we found out that the show has a very similar opening sequence to Game of Thrones. In fact, they even use the same theme music.

The opening sequence is basically another take on the Game of Thrones one, with similar visuals and identical music. It lists off the cast members as the camera pans across models of locations in Westeros, as well as following a blood stream. And for some viewers, this felt like too close of a copy to Game of Thrones.

How did people react?

Reactions on social media were split, with some criticising the show for using the exact same theme.

To some, it felt like a cheap way to remind people about Game of Thrones rather than giving House of the Dragon its own memorable music. It was criticised for being lazy, exploitative or repetitive.

On the other hand, some viewers appreciated the callback to Game of Thrones. The visuals are arguably reminiscent of the original show while still matching the new show’s locations and tone. But it does seem like a bit of a missed opportunity to have a different rendition of the classic theme music, perhaps with some more Targaryen flavour.

Regardless, House of the Dragon is setting itself up to be an excellent prequel series if it can keep up the quality. Hopefully no repeats of Game of Thrones Season 8 here.
