Wave 1 of the new Mario Kart 8 DLC tracks are officially out, and some fans are not happy about the decisions made about Coconut Mall.
When we got the news that there would be a Nintendo Direct in early February, many Mario Kart fans were hoping for an announcement of a new game. Instead, we got the announcement of the Booster Course Pass. Which is good or bad news depending on who you ask.
The big problem was that pretty quickly, people noticed that the tracks didn’t look quite the same graphical style as in the base game. Fans recently noticed that the tracks have received a bit of an update since the announcement trailer. With Coconut Mall having a noticeable difference in its lighting. But that doesn’t mean fans are happy with how Coconut Mall has turned out.
what are the problems?
One Mario Kart fan, Hyper Seap, pointed out some of the issues with Coconut Mall (thanks, TheGamer). In the original Nintendo Wii version of Coconut Mall, there were cars that would be obstacles on the course driven by Miis that you made. Now, these are Shy Guys, which is something Hyper Seap says they can forgive. But one thing that bothers them in particular is the change of the escalators.
In the original version of Coconut Mall, the mall has a set of escalators that mostly just look like large versions of them. More kart appropriate, if you will. But Hyper Seap points out how now they just look like “super telegraphed steep ramps that would not exist anywhere except for a Mario Kart track.” Technically, escalators like that do exist, and they’re called travelators. But Hyper Seap is right in that you wouldn’t see them in a mall.
Luckily though, fans do have the opportunity to try the DLC before they buy it. As tracks will be playable online regardless of whether you have bought the DLC or not.
