Modern Warfare 2 might get DLC in 2023 instead of a new Call of Duty game

Modern Warfare 2 will reportedly have story DLC in 2023 instead of a new Call of Duty release, backing up previous rumours.

Earlier in 2022, rumours were making the rounds that Call of Duty will not release a full game in 2023. If true, it would be the first time that the series has skipped a year since 2005.

Call of Duty hasn’t skipped an entry for nearly 2 decades!

The last time the series skipped a year was between Call of Duty (2003) and Call of Duty 2 (2005). So, this would be quite a big deal if the rumours came to fruition. However, new reports have also backed up claims that there will not be a series entry next year.

The latest rumours are courtesy of “Call of Duty leaker” The Ghost of Hope on Twitter. Back in September 2022, Hope claimed to have heard from a “trustworthy source” that Infinity Ward plans to release “all/most” maps from the original Modern Warfare 2.

It was also claimed that all the Modern Warfare 2 maps from 2009 will arrive to this year’s reboot at the same time as post-launch content “very likely” in year 2.

Furthermore, in October, Hope claimed that in celebration of the series’ 20th anniversary, a “greatest hits map pack” will be released.

This map pack will not only feature maps from MW2 (2009) but also from the likes of Treyarch as well as Sledgehammer entries. Again, this map pack is said to be released as year 2 content for the Modern Warfare 2 reboot.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 will get story DLC and a Map Pack, apparently

However, there is more. In a tweet this week, Hope now claims to have an “exclusive” and reported instead of a full release in 2023, MW2 will have storyDLC. This is in addition to the rumoured map pack.

Obviously, we must take all rumours and speculation with a pinch of salt. That being said, I believe there is often no smoke without fire. Additionally, if the series skips 2023, it would make sense to release the story DLC as a stopgap.

Furthermore, with 2023 being the 20^th anniversary of the series, it also makes sense that Activision will celebrate that milestone, most likely with big in-game events and perhaps fan-favourite DLC.

When Is Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 2 Being Released?

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 will be released on October 28^th for PC, PlayStation as well as Xbox. However, if you pre-order the game digitally, you will get access to its single player campaign a week early.

When Will The New Call Of Duty Warzone Arrive?

The new incarnation of the free-to-play battle royale shooter dubbed “Warzone 2.0” will launch about two weeks after Modern Warfare 2 on November 16^th.
