Wearable video game merchandise is all the rage these days. From Nintendo themed Vans to even extortionate Super Mario smartwatches, video games have never been more fashionable. However, the designer footwear company Lavair has somehow managed to create a pair of Mega Drive trainers that are actually more expensive than the original console was back in the ’90s [via VGC].
That’s right; the new Lavair X Sega Mega Drive sneakers will set you back £200 ($270). While paying a couple of hundred for designer footwear is perhaps a given, the fact that a brand new Mega Drive console back at launch was £189.99 is quite amusing. Here’s Lavair’s pitch for its 16-bit designer sneakers:
“The EXO SEGA MEGA DRIVE flaunts technical aesthetics with a full thermoplastic polyurethane eye-stay and weather-resistant toe guard and draped in a hi-tensile nylon upper. EXO sits on top of a streetwear-inspired outsole, combined with outdoor trekker detailing for optimal comfort underneath the brands’ signature, lighter-than-air sole.”
If SEGA themed footwear isn’t enough for you, you’ll be pleased to know that the collection also includes two accompanying baseball caps. While the trainers themselves feature the Mega Drive’s iconic grid pattern branding, the caps feature the Mega Drive logo and a rather flashy inlay.
The question is, should you buy these pricey pumps? Well, if you really like designer kicks and SEGA hardware, then why not! However, for 200 big ones, you could probably buy an original Mega Drive console and a few games.
