Sega has teased a new Sonic reveal at The Game Awards this Friday. The new title, called Sonic Frontiers, has supposedly been in development for sometime. However, it would appear Sega is finally ready to show it off at 2021’s last major gaming event.
Sega revealed a short teaser trailer for the title which people believe to be Sonic Frontiers earlier this year. While it isn’t confirmed if this trailer is Sonic Frontiers, it does line up as a title developed by Sonic Team, which is the team behind Frontiers.
Very little is known about Sonic Frontiers, although it will supposedly be an open-world game. However, Sonic Team doesn’t have the best track record in recent years. The last major Sonic Team release, Sonic Forces, currently sits at an average Metacritic review score of 58/100.
The reveal seems likely due to an interaction between the official Sonic Twitter account, and Geoff Keighley, who runs The Game Awards. Keighley often teases reveals in this manner, using his Twitter account to drum up hype for the event.
Sonic fans were already speculating ahead of the event, when an eagle-eyed fan spotted that Sega had registered for a Sonic Frontiers domain. The domain is live at the time of writing, however it is not accessible. It’s likely this domain will go live on Friday inline with a reveal at the game awards.
It’s been a big year for the Sonic brand, as Sega celebrated its 30th anniversary. There have been a number of celebrations throughout the year, including an excellent 30th anniversary stream which included an orchestra and two live bands.
Elsewhere, a Bioshock 4 leak seems to suggest the location for the next entry in the series. According to Colin Moriarty, the next game in the series will be set during the 1960s, in a fictional Antarctic city.
