New trademark suggests classic PlayStation game could be returning

A Square Enix trademark suggests that Parasite Eve could soon be making a triumphant return. Could it finally be happening?

Remakes have been taking off a lot lately. In particular, following the success of the Resident Evil 2 remake in 2019. Since then, publishers have been really eager to repeat the success of Capcom.

We’d love to see Parasite Eve return!

However, rumours of a Parasite Eve return were making the rounds in 2021. The original Parasite Eve was released for the first PlayStation in 1998. This RPG blended elements of both classic Resident Evil as well as Final Fantasy.

Furthermore, despite earning a respectable 81/100 on Metacritic, Parasite Eve hasn’t been Square Enix’s most critically acclaimed game. Nonetheless, gathering a cult-like status, fans have been calling for a remake for many years.

In fact, we at GameByte have also been calling for Parasite Eve to be remade, starring in our “Great RPGs that Deserve a Modern Remake” and “Is PlayStation looking at the wrong games to remake?” featured articles.

However, if a recent trademark is anything to go by, the highly requested Parasite Eve remake (or remaster) might have taken its biggest step yet to becoming a reality.

As reported by Gematsu, on October 13th, Square Enix filed a trademark for “Symbiogenesis” which was then made public over the weekend.

What could this trademark by Square Enix mean for Parasite Eve?

According to a Wiki entry, the definition of Symbiogenesis is: “the merging of two separate organisms to form a single new organism.” This definition was the foundation of the Parasite Eve novel that was released in 1995 before being adapted to a video game by Square Enix in 1998.

If Parasite Eve does make a return, it will surely be a welcomed addition by fans. Not only for those that enjoyed the original PS1 game, but also for new fans too. Unlike its sequel, the original Parasite Eve was never released in Europe or any other region outside of Japan or North America.

So, whether it’s a remake or a remaster of the PS1 classic, it could mean that even more fans will be able to see what all the fuss is about by experiencing Parasite Eve for the very first time.
