Could a Game Boy mini be imminent?

Nintendo Is Considering Making More Classic Mini Consoles

Nintendo has revealed that it’s considering whether or not to make more mini consoles like the NES Classic Edition. Could a Game Boy Classic Edition be in the pipeline?

During a recent Nintendo General Meeting of Shareholders, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa unveiled the company’s thought process when it comes to classic gaming [via VGC]:

“We always want our products to be played by people of all ages, from children to adults. In fact, after being in the video game business for many years, we believe that there is now a very wide range of generations who have adopted Nintendo consoles.

“We will continue to examine the possibility of offering classic content, such as with the NES and Super NES Classic Mini series, as well as our online services, as a way of communicating the appeal of our products to different generations.”

Released back in 2016, the NES Classic Edition gave the retro plug and play console market a new lease of life. Since then, various retro mini consoles have emerged on the market, including Nintendo’s own SNES Classic Edition, which contains 21 iconic 16-bit titles.

Sadly, while Nintendo’s mini consoles are immensely popular, the company has shied away from the scene altogether. Instead, Nintendo has been focussing on the Switch Online experience, which comes with a library of classic games. To celebrate both Mario and The Legend of Zelda’s anniversaries, the company has also created a new version of its first handheld, the Nintendo Game and Watch.

So, is Nintendo planning on making more mini consoles?

Well, it’s hard to say. However, the fact that Furukawa highlighted the product during a shareholders meeting is promising. Nintendo could also use its Game & Watch revival as a basis for a new Game Boy Classic Edition. While the themed collector’s items are less comprehensive than their home mini console counterparts, the tech would make for one hell of a mini Game Boy experience. I mean, imagine not having to sit on the surface of the sun to see a Game Boy screen. It’s a revolutionary concept!

Hopefully, Nintendo will get back to making classic mini consoles at some point in the near future. Who knows, perhaps we’ll even get a Nintendo 64 Mini! (a nerd can dream).
