Thanksgiving may be a time for…y’know…giving thanks, but it’s also a time to get some great deals and bargains on your favourite tech goodies. Although the Nintendo Switch and the newer Switch Lite didn’t see too many heavy discounts during the sales this year, it seems the company has shifted a huge number of consoles – a record-breaking amount, in fact.
As reported by BusinessWire, over 800,000 Switch consoles were sold over Thanksgiving week in the US alone, which is most likely due to the Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals.
The total number of Nintendo Switch sales across the Americas has now reached 17.5 million, which is more than the PlayStation Vita shifted in its entire lifecycle.
Another likely reason for the boost in sales is down to the recent launch of Pokemon Sword and Shield, which released during the first week of November.
Although the Switch is absolutely proving there’s a market for handheld devices, it seems Nintendo is set to be the only forerunner in the field for now.
In a recent interview with Game Informer, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment Jim Ryan looked back at the last portable PlayStation console: the PlayStation Vita, admitting PlayStation is fully out of the handheld market.
“PlayStation Vita was brilliant in many ways, and the actual gaming experience was great, but clearly it’s a business that we’re no longer in now,” Ryan told the publication.
With the Switch’s amazing back-catalogue of games, along with its TV-to-handheld accessibility, the Switch is arguably the best console on the market right now (as long as you’re willing to sacrifice some graphical prowess).
