PlayStation Boss Says ‘Expect More Acquisitions’ Following Bungie Buyout

PlayStation boss Jim Ryan has told us to “expect more acquisitions” following the Bungie $3.6 billion buyout this week.

Yesterday Sony made the surprise acquisition of Destiny and original Halo developer Bungie. Sure, this bit of business is small in comparison to the mammoth $68 billion that Microsoft paid for Activision Blizzard. But it’s certainly making waves in the industry nonetheless.

However, it seems that Sony has more acquisitions in the pipeline following the PlayStation and Bungie deal. That’s at least according to PlayStation and Sony Interactive CEO, Jim Ryan. “We should absolutely expect more,” Ryan told Gamesindustry.biz.

The CEO continued: “We are by no means done. With PlayStation, we have a long way to go. I will personally be spending a lot of my time with Pete and the team at Bungie, helping make sure that everything beds down right and that autonomy means autonomy. But elsewhere in the organisation, we have many more moves to make.

Who’s next for Sony?

At this time, it is anyone’s guess as to which studio Sony will acquire next. It wouldn’t surprise me if it picks up some promising small independent studios. However, if Sony wanted to continue to make a big splash in the industry, perhaps the likes of Square Enix, Capcom or Konami could be on its radar.

Who do you think Sony will acquire next and do you think it will be able to compete with Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard as well as Bethesda? Let us know your thoughts across our social media channels.
