Review aggregation website OpenCritic has issued a warning to its readers over the quality of CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077.
Despite its issues Cyberpunk 2077 has reviewed rather well, receiving scores of nines out of 10 and a Recommend seal of approval from some top media outlets. However, it’s important to note that these pre-release scores were solely for the PC version of the game, with the title’s quality issues being mostly confined to base consoles.
This week, despite issuing an apology for the quality of Cyberpunk 2077 in an apparent attempt of damage limitation, CDPR potentially caused more outrage when fans were declined refunds for the game.
Now the game has released across all platforms, gamers are reporting a range of issues such as bugs, crashes, animation glitches and poor framerates. Most of these seem to generate from those playing on PS4 and Xbox One consoles, rather than PC or via new-gen consoles.
“We would like to start by apologising to you for not showing the game on base last gen consoles before it premiered and, in consequence, not allowing you to make a more informed decision about your purchase,” CDPR said in the statement.
It continued: “We should have paid more attention to making it play better on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. We will fix bugs and crashes, and improve the overall experience.”
If you’re seeing loads of positive reviews for Cyberpunk 2077 the chances are that they might have been played via new-gen consoles and on PC , and not last-gen consoles.
This perhaps does not offer a fair reflection to those that want to pick up Cyberpunk 2077 on PS4 and Xbox One. (IGN has scored Cyberpunk 2077 a 4/10 on PS4 and Xbox One).
In an attempt to better inform their readers, aggregation website OpenCritic has issued the following warning to those wanting to be informed of reviews for Cyberpunk 2077.
“Please note: This game has significant disparities in performance, player experience, and review scores between the PC, next-gen consoles, Xbox One, and PS4 versions,” said OpenCritic in a PSA.
“The OpenCritic team and several critics suspect that the developer, CD PROJEKT RED, intentionally sought to hide the true state of the game on Xbox One and PS4, with requirements such as only allowing pre-rendered game footage in reviews and not issuing review copies for PS4 and Xbox One versions.
“This notice will be taken down in February 2021.”
It’s certainly a very blunt and honest PSA from OpenCritic but I’m sure it is one that its readers will appreciate.
