According to rumours, Capcom is already hard at work on the development of Resident Evil 9, despite the eighth mainline game having not yet released.

The rumours come courtesy of Twitter’s AestheticGamer, who has a fairly reliable track record when it comes to leaking reliable Resident Evil information before it’s made official.

Right now there’s a long discussion thread on Aesthetic Gamer’s Twitter page which delves into Resident Evil games of the past, present and future. It’s a rabbit hole of fan chatter and speculation, and well worth checking out if you’re an RE fan.

On the topic of future Resident Evil titles, Aesthetic Gamer said they believe Resident Evil 9 is already in development, or at least is in the early stages of pre-production.

Responding to a tweet Aesthetic Gamer said: “Yes [they are working on RE 9], but don’t expect it anytime soon.

To be realistic, any release of Resident Evil 9 is years away, and we‘ll most likely get spin-off titles before then, such as the rumoured Resident Evil: Revelations 3.

I literally cannot see it [RE9] releasing before 2024. To the point it’s actually not worth even talking about right now, anything could happen to it in dev, from the whole thing being rebooted (it’s happened a lot in the RE series),” tweeted Aesthetic Gamer.

Let’s face it, a Resident Evil 9 pretty likely thanks to the ever-increasing popularity of the iconic survival horror series, so this alleged leak isn’t too much of a stretch.

Capcom is also known to start the development of its Resident Evil games years before their existence is made officially known to the public. This is why it often seems like its games release quite quickly from one to the next.

As for how long it might take Capcom to develop a game, a follower of Aesthetic Gamer asked whether a three-and-a-half-year development time is enough to finish a game properly.

That depends on a lot of factors, 3.5 years is fine for some games,” replied Aesthetic Gamer.

To my knowledge, Resident Evil Village will have been in dev for over 4.5 years when it releases, which ties it as the RE game in dev for the longest, & one without any major reboots (were big changes though).

As always, all rumours must be taken with a pinch of salt. However, that can’t stop us from speculating about the development of Resident Evil 9! Let us know your hopes across our social media channels.
